BACKGROUND
I’ve been married to an amazing woman, Sharon Sabin, since 1996. We also have a beautiful daughter, Julia, who is now 25. Sharon and I live in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston and Julia lives in Brooklyn. Julia is developing a career in the world of costume design and creation. Sharon and I retired in 2024.
I started college at the University of Buffalo in 1974 and transferred after two years to RIT, for a computer engineering program. After RIT, I went on to earn a Masters at RPI and moved to Boston in 1980 to be a true techie nerd. However, in 1989 I left engineering to study photography – vision has always been a hugely important thing for me. I’ve had numerous corneal surgeries in my life, from age 10 up to the present. I studied photography later in the 90’s (I love college!) at Maryland College of Art while I worked at Massachusetts College of Art (MassArt). And I just finished up a career at MassArt as an academic advisor and retired in December, 2023. Sharon is a photographer as well and just retired from her career as a graphic designer.
I’m working now much more intensively on my photographs, which involves manipulating images with photo editing software. My originally sharp photographs of random things I shoot in my neighborhood, become like abstract or semi-abstract paintings. My grandfather, Laszlo Szabo, was a Hungarian-born artist and painter so I’m loving the kind of “painting” I can do with photo imagery in Adobe Photoshop. My most recent projects are available to view at www.szabolightwave.com.
My older brother Andy lives in Manhattan, works in the world of finance, and has a quint count of great kids. I have a sister, Heather, who lives in Cheektowaga, NY with her husband John Jones, her son Austin Jones, and her daughter Alex Szabo. Heather works as a Wealth Management Assistant.
